Inspiring Artistic Legacy

Michelle Cagney was a dedicated and passionate middle school art teacher in the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District, whose influence extended far beyond the classroom, shaping the lives of her students and the community she loved. With her passion for art and education, Michelle inspired countless students to explore their creativity and pursue their dreams. She was known for her vibrant personality, boundless energy, and an ever-present smile that could light up any room.

One of her most enduring legacies is the Folsom Rocks project, lovingly known by the hashtag #FolsomRocks. Michelle and her students painted rocks with uplifting messages and scattered them throughout Folsom. These colorful stones still brighten bike trails, parks, and public spaces all over town. They serve as lasting reminders of the hope and encouragement she shared with the community.
Empower
Growth
Michelle’s classroom was a place where art was not just about creating beautiful pieces. It was also about growing as individuals. She emphasized a “growth mindset”—a key component of social-emotional learning—by teaching students to value the process of creating art. She showed them how to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Her inclusive approach brought in artistic traditions from cultures around the world. She celebrated diversity and created a safe space for all her students.

One of her favorite projects was inspired by George Rodrigue's “Blue Dog.” She encouraged students to bring their own passions into their art by creating colourful, personalized portraits of their beloved pets in a “blue dog”-esque style. This project, like so many of Michelle’s lessons, allowed students to express themselves while connecting to the larger world of art and creativity. Beyond the classroom, Michelle developed and ran the “Artsonia” program. This program allowed students' artwork to be digitized and printed on everyday items like bags, towels, t-shirts, and mugs. Not only did this initiative help students see the tangible value of their creative work, but it also generated funds to support educational arts programming at the school.

Impacts
One of these programs was theatre, where Michelle helped bring the performing arts to life for her students. She directed a middle school production of "Into the Woods," where her own daughter played the Witch. Later, she produced The Emperor’s New Clothes, giving her daughter the chance to direct for the first time. Her passion for theatre extended even further when she established the first-ever International Thespian Society chapter at her middle school. Michelle created a space where young performers could meet twice a week, learn acting techniques, and find their voices. Her support led students to participate in conferences at other schools. The students won bronze, silver, and gold medals—an amazing achievement that showcased the lasting impact of her dedication.
Through all of her projects and programs, Michelle always found ways to celebrate her students’ efforts. She frequently submitted their artwork to contests and scholarships. She believed wholeheartedly in their potential and showed them the possibilities their futures could hold. Her ability to uplift and inspire was unmatched. She leaves behind a legacy of encouragement, hope, and the belief that art can change lives.

A Lasting Legacy

Her spirit lives on in every painted rock, every colorful “blue dog” portrait, and every life she touched.
